Introduction
Cybernetics is a transdisciplinary and “antidisciplinary” approach concerned with regulatory and purposive systems—their structures, constraints, and possibilities. The core concept of the discipline is circular causality or feedback—that is, where the outcomes of actions are taken as inputs for further action.
The word “Cybernetics” was first defined by Norbert Wiener who wrote a book with the same title in 1948. It stemmed from the conditions of World War I and his involvement as a scientist and weapons engineer using the concepts of Brownian motion and the Wiener Filter. Brownian motion is the random motion of particles suspended in a medium that can be a liquid or a gas. It suggest that the pattern of motion is random fluctuations, followed by relocation to another location, based upon the previous movements. The pattern continues as the substance and particles seek thermal equilibrium, which is defined by the temperature as the independent variable.
The Wiener Filter is a filter that produces an estimate of either a desired process or a random process. They are linear time-invariant filtering systems which mean that the event is independent of the time of occurrence or when the input was applied. This is applied to observed noise processes which include: known stationary signal and noise spectra, and additive noise, where interference is added to the signal during the communication. The Wiener filter minimizes the mean square error between the estimated random process (random variable) and the desired process (range or parameter of sample) as either the predictor or the estimator.
Wiener’s Cybernetics thus he termed as the study of control and communication in the animal and the machine. He used the Greek κυβερνήτης (kybernētēs, steersman, governor, pilot, or rudder). This understanding of control and communication is one of his greater contributions to humanity, blending abstract science with the sociological science and engineering and apply them to activities such as design, education, communication, and process management.
Modern Use of Cybernetics and Circular Causality
Our current use of cybernetics is concerned with computing, artificial intelligence, cognitive science, complexity science, and robotics processes. And it focusses on purposeful behavior motivated by neural networks that do not possess a rank and can interact with information and self-organizing systems.
When we look at the concept of circular causality, we view either a single cause or a sequence of causes and the associated effects that creates a new first cause which is a derivative of the original cause which has either altered or confirms it (reiterates), and therefore producing a new sequence, in the way of a feedback loop. Again circular causation and its associated feedback are used in philosophy, ethics, sociology, applied and pure sciences. Cybernetics then, underlies all systems and their communication with all systems.
Critical Analysis with Cybernetic Approaches
So we have defined cybernetics; its dynamics and its range. Let us now quickly view its practical application through the use of critical analysis in effectiveness and efficiency. As we mentioned cybernetics is used in technical, scientific, creative, and philosophical approaches to a range of disciplines. In order to outline a simple example we look at the desire to program (write a set of instructions) a robot to get from one location to another. This could be any object that we want to govern and control and we could have chosen goldfish, mice, monkeys, or light, electrons, or anything else. Let us assume that we want the Robot to move through a maze from one square to the next in a series of steps that have limited values (i.e. no more than two steps at a time and defined with direction, vectors). We can even place a limit (maximum) of the number of steps that one can use to get to the chose destination. In this example we have our Robot friend, Cyber, who must get to the leader of the Roman civilization, Julius Caesar during the time of 46 – 44 BC. Let us ignore at this time the discrepancy of time periods. See how you would get the Cyber to Julius. He must land on G7 in order to fulfil his mission.
This type of analysis is precisely the function of Cybernetics in which the actions are controlled, the outcome predictable and in this case within the range of causality, as the inputs result in outputs that are the feedback, and future inputs of causation.
What is the Value of this Sort of Analysis
As a Psion, we learn cybernetics from the roots upwards. We identify the heart and soul of cybernetics within the physical and energetic fields that govern them. The knowledge of this field means that the Psion will become adept at the design of family structures, and will competently mange organizations at their core levels, with creativity, virtue and ethics which means that we will be working in harmony with the creative forces that make up the world and not against them.
Well, we will leave it there and we thank you for reading!
