Preface After a long period of suffering for an end that resulted in the Declaration of Independence being drafted in secret by the Original 13 states of the Americas and then served to the King of Great Britain. This was precipitated by a number of taxes that the British enacted to pay for their war efforts with the French. It was said that the French and British wars over the land in the Americas had costed Great Britain billions of dollars. 1764: Sugar Act was aimed at ending the smuggling trade in sugar and molasses from the French and Dutch West Indies increasing Great Britain's revenues. This represented taxation without representation and was considered grossly unfair. 1765: Stamp Act was an imposed direct tax on the American colonies that required that printed materials be produced on stamped paper produced in London, The printed materials included legal documents, magazines, playing cards, newspapers, and other types of paper, which had to be paid in British currency. 1766: Declaratory Act was enacted to state that the Parliament's authority was the same in America as in Britain and asserted Parliament's authority to pass laws that were binding on the American colonies. 1767: Townshend Acts placed new taxes and took away freedoms such as new taxes on imports of paper, paint, lead, glass, and tea. 1773: Tea Act granted a monopoly to a Tea Company allowing the company the right to ship its tea directly to the colonies without first landing it in England, and to commission agents who would have the sole right to sell tea in the colonies. This Act meant that the colonies had to purchase the tea solely from Great Britain's agents. 1774: Coercive Acts (Intolerable Acts) was made up of several different Acts.
